How to make henna for temporary tattoos

Updated: Nov 1, 2019

Learn how to make henna from a professional henna artist!

First things first, you need high quality henna powder. This means it should be from a reputable source that offers body art quality henna that is sifted. I'll place links down below for shops I've purchased from.

Next, you need an essential oil that is safe to add in your henna. This is what helps the henna develop its colour. I use eucalyptus essential oil and have also used lavender in the past. Lavender is a bit pricey but both work wonderfully. I've seen other henna artists use cajeput and tea tree.

Third, you need some form of sugar. I use plain ol' white sugar. You can experiment with other forms such as brown sugar, molasses, honey, corn syrup, etc. Depending on where you live, the amount will vary. The sugar helps keep the henna from drying out as it is a natural humectant. The longer the henna is somewhat moist and on your skin, the more the dye will stain your skin.

Lastly, you need a liquid to bind it all together. I use warm water but I have used lemon juice in the past. Personally, I like ingredients that are readily available so I stick to water.

Ingredients

Henna - 32 grams

Essential oil - 9 grams

Sugar - 15 grams

Water (warm) - Varies

Instructions

1. Take the henna powder and mix it with the sugar.

2. Slowly add some water and mix it thoroughly with the henna powder.

3. Repeat step 2 until the consistency is a toothpaste like consistency.

4. Add the essential oil and mix well.

5. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit somewhere warm for 2-24 hours. Depending on the climate where you live, this will vary. This is when dye release will happen.

6. Once the dye has released, you will see a contrast with the top layer of the henna and then it will be ready to be coned.

Tip: If the henna is too runny, add more powder but remember to let it sit for dye release. If it's too thick, just add water.
